How dialysis work as kidney treatment
How dialysis work as kidney treatment
Dialysis is one of the way used to remove waste materials from ones body. It is mostly used when
kidneys fail to perform their duties up to 90%.
There are two ways in which dialysis is administered;
a. Hemodialysis. This is a case where one uses an artificial kidney to remove waste from the body.
In this type, a minor surgery is done on ones arm or leg so as to make an access to the blood vessels.
Blood is then directed to the artificial kidney for it cleaning process. In case there is no access to the
blood vessels, plastic tubes are used to join artery and veins under the skin a method known as graft.
Blood will be directed to the artificial kidney through these tubes.
The time which this method take depends on rate of work of the kidney, amount of waste in the body,
the size of the body and the type of the kidney used. Hemodialysis is mostly done 3to 4 times per week.
b. Persistence dialysis. This is a method of dialysis where blood cleaning is done in one’s body.
Surgery is done and plastic tube are placed in one’s abdomen. During treatment, waste product
which include unwanted fluids, salts and other chemicals are drawn out of the blood in to the
dialysate which fill the abdomen.
When dialysis is performed in to a patient, his or her body will be in balanced state since there will be a
removal of unwanted chemicals such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate from the body. It also plays
an effective role in control of blood pressure and also regulate blood sugars.
Sometimes when dialysis is being done to a patient, he or she may continue with his or her life as
normal without further dialysis. In some case, there are need for dialysis after a given period of time. No
matter the case a patient can continue with his or her normal life and go on with his or her day to day
activities.
