HEALTHCARE STATISTICS 2
Descriptive statistics is important in simplifying the large amounts of data into
sensible and easily interpretable information. For instance, the representation of large data
into charts, graphs and tables enhances the sense that can be drawn from a set of data such as
its trends in terms of its lowest and highest marks. We can also make inferences using
descriptive statistics about a given group data and make clever guesses about the data (Davis,
2015). By drawing inferences from a descriptive statistics, a healthcare facility will benefit in
making important decisions in regard to affairs affecting it such as quality of its services. In
addition, with a simplified data, a facility can make important hypothesis that will inform its
cause of action in addressing issues affecting it in terms of cause and effects
A central tendency is a value that describes a group of data by identifying the central
positions of that data (Osborn, 2000). Examples of measures of central tendency include
mean, median, and mode. On the other end, measure of variability is the measure of
dispersion of a given set of data (Osborn, 2000). Examples of measures of variability include
range, variance, and standard deviation.
Descriptive statistics is beneficial to various aspects of a facility, especially on quality
improvement. A health facility can use descriptive statistics to measure its performance
success and failure in establishing its benchmarks for improving quality and efficiency of its
services. Additionally, a facility can utilize descriptive statistics to map out its overall growth
and the viability of the quality of its healthcare.
