Pre Laboratory 6
1. Define biomolecule.
Answer: A molecule can be seen as a group of atoms which are connected to each other in order to
create what is known as the smallest fundamental unit of a compound.Biomolecules are a form of
molecules which are found naturally in the organism. They are also known as the biological molecules.
2. What are the four types of biomolecules?
Answer: There are four main types of biomolecules : lipids (composed of long hydrocarbon chains ),
proteins ( with enormous variation) , carbohydrates ( provide the energy source for the cell ) and nucleic
acids ( responsible for the genetic information)
3. What is the largest biomolecule in living cells?
Answer: When referring to the 4 classes of biomolecules, the proteins are the biggest ones, that’s
because they are made from several amino acids.
4. What is the most abundant molecule in living cells?
Answer : Because 70% of the cell Is made of water we can say that the answer to this question is
represented by the water.
Post Laboratory 6
1. What is the importance of controls in your experiments? Are they necessary? Why or why not?
Answer: Controls in any experiments are essential because they make sure that there are not any
unknown either external or internal factors that could interfere with the results you are trying to find.
Control groups are used in order to compare the result because all the controlled factors are not
modified during the experiments so they are the gold standard when it comes to detecting anomalies
during the procedure.
1. Complete Table 6.6 below to demonstrate your understanding of each of the four assays performed
