Romancing the Vampire
Semiotics is an element of communication that derives meaning from signs and symbols
and manifests itself in every individual. Every individual has a different way of interpreting
things, whether consciously or subconsciously. Ferdinand De Saussure adopted the terms
signifier and signified, the former representing the sound or the image one sees, while the latter
means the concept or the real meaning of the particular thing (Berger, 86). The article
Romancing the Vampire,’ on the other hand, discusses various vampire series including
Twilight,’ True Blood and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Clearly, the concept of How Signs
Work’ is evident in the aforementioned movie series.
Usually, vampires are a symbol of impossible desires and extremism. Moreover, the idea
of romantic relations with a vampire is equated with death. However, there is a paradigm shift in
twilight as a vampire by the name Edward refuses sex with Bella on account that he does not
want to hurt her. “The gentlemanly Edward not only refuses sex because of the danger to Bella,
he also swoops in to pluck her out of sexually threatening situations.” (Backstein, 40). Also, he
saves her from several encounters of sexual molestation. Comparatively in How Signs Work,’
Charles Sanders Pierce claims that signs are related to objects by resembling them. He further
claims that there are various considerations into this; a sign can resemble the characters of the

the object, it is known as a symbol. Notably, the issue of symbolism replicates in ‘Romancing
the Vampire.’
In how signs work, there exists a concept of signifier and signified. The former is defined
as the overview, represented by image and sound (Berger, 8). The latter is the concept that the
image intends to convey. Similarly, ‘’Romancing the vampire’ incorporates the aforementioned
concept in that the vampires represent an existence that conflicts the human race. The signified,
however, is the fact that the vampires do not mean harm after all.
