Speech-Language Pathologist

Speech-language pathologists are also commonly referred to as speech therapists. Their job

is to “assess, diagnose, treat and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders”

(BLS, 2017). Many people who are patients are one’s with injuries, delays in their

communication abilities, and even autism. The pathologist will develop activities they put their

patients through, and take notes will monitoring them. They must observe if there is any progress

over the course of their treatments. Plans can be developed out of the reports that they create, and

help assist family members, as well as their other healthcare workers in their life, with the proper

therapy.

In addition to creating reports and therapy plans, speech-language pathologists have many

skills and abilities that they utilize. They actively listen to what is being said to them, so they can

exercise logic and reasoning with the “strengths, and weaknesses of alternative solutions,

conclusions or approaches to problems” (OOH, 2017). Many individuals are referred to the

office of a speech pathologist, due to their many abilities to assist an endless amount of issues.

They help individuals who have suffered from neurological issues such as, “oral motor,

swallowing, cognitive-linguistic, and speech or language skills” (Mayo Clinic, 2017). There are

opportunities in schools for speech pathologists to assist in the identifying of students who have

disabilities. They help identify what the issues are, and even participate in education programs,

such as the IEP.

Speech-language pathologists offer a lot to the health industry. They play a role in the care

of doctor’s patients who have had medical issues or disorders. The doctors are only limited as to

what they can do for their patient’s, so they make a referral to a speech therapist, who can assist

in greater detail. If speech therapists did not exist, the health industry would have nowhere to
