EFFECTS OF INDIAN OCEON TSUNAMI 2
Damage Brought By The Indian Ocean Earthquake And Tsunami
The Indian Ocean earthquake took place more than ten years ago on the 26
th
of
December 2014 on the Indonesian coast. It also extended to other areas including Sri Lanka,
India and Thailand (Cochard, R., et, al. 2006). Close to ten countries were affected by the
effects of the tsunami. The intensity of the magnitude of the earthquake was 9.1 which is the
most destructive tsunami and earthquake to have happened in a span of forty years. In this
essay, I will discuss the damages caused by this earthquake.
The Tsunami had widespread effect on the transport system. A lot of infrastructural
facilities were destroyed and pushed into the ocean. Roads and bridges were swept away
leaving many places impassable. Rescue teams were affected since roads were disrupted.
Secondly, the fishing system and the energy sectors were destroyed. Fuel and fuel
depots belonging to Pertamina company innceh province were all destroyed. Electricity
distribution channels were destroyed and there was a total blackout in so many of the places
affected (Cochard, R., et, al. 2006).
Many people also lost their lives during these catastrophes. Others were left injured
and displaced from their original homes. Children, women died in thousands. It is estimated
that a total of 5,078 people lost their lives while those that sustained injuries were 8457
individuals. Those who were missing were 3716 people.
