BRAXTON BRAGG 2
Braxton Bragg and His Contribution to American History
Braxton Bragg was a United States army officer who lived (1817-1876) and served
during the American civil war of 1861 to 1865 (McWhiney, G., & Hallock, J. L. (1969). He
initially served the army as a confidante but was later on promoted to a full general. H e was
renowned for his strict discipline. He was a brilliant officer who planned his attacks well; the
only shortcoming was he failed to execute the attacks well. He often quarrelled with his
seniors.
In 1863 after gaining victory in the battle of Chickamauga, he retreated his army to
Chattanooga as he thought that he was going to get more victories there. He was lucky
enough as the union general Ulysses S. Grant came to their rescue (Hackney, S.
(2010). Bragg became so hated by most people after the civil war. He faced more humiliation
in other battles and was forced to retire. He became the military adviser to the president
Jefferson Davis. After the civil war, he worked a s a civil engineer and died aged 59 years
(McWhiney, G., & Hallock, J. L. (1969).
