Response to Yahaira
Advocacy and inquiry are some of the key communication behaviors which have critical
implications on the effectiveness for interpersonal, group or even institution.
I agree with Yahaira Madrid on her response concerning Inquiry and advocacy approach.
Yahaira argues that in the challenger disaster case, advocacy and inquiry were both utilized in
decision making process but he believes that the advocacy was used the most. Yahaira is correct
in her argument as to how the challenger disaster case was mostly associated with advocacy
approach as opposed to inquiry approach. According to Tompkins (2001), advocacy-based
decision is very self-interested approach as compared to inquiry approach. What this shows is the
limitation of relying on advocacy approach when there are other interested stakeholders in a
given topic of discussion. Effective negotiation and the ability to give other individuals a chance
to share out their opinion, ideas or concerns on a given matter is paramount in achieving
effective decision making on how to solve a problem at hand. I believe that inquiry approach
helps to promote teamwork and cohesiveness among individuals as it allows the idea or opinion
of each member to be given serious thoughts as to whether it is helpful or not. Advocacy on the
other hand tends to promote dictatorship which makes other parties in a conversation to feel like
their opinion does not hold any significant impact on the outcome of the entire process and may
therefore withdraw from such conversation. I believe that the manner in which an individual, a
group, or an organization communicates by either using advocacy or inquiry approach impacts
on the learning, management of emotions, and the provision of feedback to a given discussion. In
complex and controversial issues, like the one above, the utilization of high degree of advocacy
and limited inquiry undermines the aspect of inclusivity as individuals ability to learn about the
