Response to Discussion Post
While I agree most of the points presented in your post on the challenges faced by the
non-clinical administration in the utilization of the principles of evidence-based management and
leadership, my perspective on this aspect of the topic is that clinical leaders have a role play in
dealing with some of the problems. First, we need to understand that these managers are the ones
responsible for ensuring the availability of the resources needed by us to perform our duties. As
you noted from your experience, the impact of a significant number of the poor decisions made
by nonclinical managers or administrator are preventable through a better understanding of the
complex processes required for patient safety. The era of exclusive professional competencies
has been replaced with collaborative participation since it is considered the most effective
method for delivering quality healthcare services (Ledger, 2010). Also, the imperative to harness
the strengths and improve the weakness of the workforce of a healthcare organization is one that
should be clinical and non-clinical team members to determine measures that can be used to
eliminate the obstacles that prevent them. Finally, Pfeffer & Sutton (2006) explained that
evidence-based management and leadership is the new paradigm in healthcare administration
that can only contribute to improvement initiatives if the participants are conversant with the
expectations of their duties.
