fatal-risk/1969603/
Often, people fail to talk about the related materials which are used by medical
practitioners including the surgeons and left in the human body until we see how costly they are
to the patient. This article is a true reflection of what patients experience after their doctors
mistakenly leave the other incidental materials which are not needed in the body. The article
discusses the victims experience after the surgical items were left in their bodies and how these
materials significantly influenced their daily lives.
The article starts by explaining the experience of Erica Parks when she realized
something was not right in her belly just after leaving Alabama Hospital after undergoing
cesarean section in 2010 (Eisler, 2017). Moreover, the article also explains the majority of
hospitals negligence on adopting the modern technologies which could help in eliminating the
risk of leaving incidental materials in the human bodies. The USA Today magazine is also
categorical in discussing some of the challenges or consequences of these mistakes which are
preventable and therefore referred to in the medical world as ‘never events’’.
The article also highlights the wake-up call of the health care providers after such
incident was reported. For instance, it is stated that the clinical leaders started testing the sponge-
tracking technologies with the aim of ensuring that the issue is never repeated in the healthcare
industry. The author of the article is also categorical in explaining some of the risks of counting
several objects or materials over an extended period, for instance in operation at the same time
having other competing tasks thus leading to errors. The long-term suffering of the patients
coupled with lack of changes despite the many cases is also discussed in the article.
