Why People Lie
Lying may be defined as making utterances intended to create false impressions and
belief. It is an attempt of making someone believe what is not true. People tell lies because they
think it serves their purpose the same way. This paper will give an analysis on why people lie,
outlining various modes of persuasions to influence a given audience. People tell lies because
they think it serves their purpose the same way and this can be confirmed by their logos,
ethos, and pathos.
Patho is a prefix to the Greek word pathos that implies to suffering. Pathological lying
may be symptomatic of issues such as wild behaviors, for instance, over-excitement, violence or
personality disorder. This set of people gets very comfortable lying, telling even when it is least
necessary, and at times leaving the audience wondering the point of it. Pathological lies may
make some sense to the specific school of thought. While people around pathological lies think
an issue is least necessary, one may lie because they believe it does. The liar believes the
deception is critically necessary (Waltonen and Vernay. Nd).Their statements are full of
undeserved emphasis, and it may be noticed when asked why the issue at hand is so fundamental.

Conversely, Ethos refers to a characteristic shared among a set of people enshrined in
their beliefs and aspirations. People lie when they are afraid of the unknown, and every time they
tell a lie the fear grows bigger and stronger. Therefore some people may lie based on their strong
belief and assumption about a particular event or phenomenon. We tell lies when we are afraid of
what we don’t know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us.
But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger. People who have done
something wrong cover up with lies in fear of the consequences of their actions. For instance; in
political scandals, representatives cover up with lies to avoid being charged for the crime.
Equally, one may tell lies to manipulate other people to do things they desire or in favor of the
liar; for instance, one may lie to their partners to have sex, money, power et.al. On the other
hand, a person may lie because of pride (Porter, ed.). One lies to create a favorable image for
themselves; often an exaggeration or falsified stories for a façade. Ethical liars are characteristic
to have absolute belief and aspirations.
Hitherto, logos is a psychological term that refers to the principle of cause and judgment.
It is based on the divine wisdom within creation. Logical lie gives a feeling that right action has
been taken, and that it was favored. There is a perception that the lie was weightier over the
truth.
Conclusion
Lying may seem simple and harmless at first, but just like any addiction, you’ll soon find
yourself trapped and entangled more than you could have ever imagined. Ethos, logos, and
pathos can influence an individual’s decision to tell a lie as they make them think it serves their
purpose the same way and this can be confirmed by their logos, ethos, and pathos.
