ROBOTICS 2
Challenges facing Engineering and Computer Science communities
The engineering and the computer science communities have great involvement in the field
of robotics. Without them, robotics would not be in existence. This is to mean that engineering
and computer science are the brains behind robotics in any way that one would look at it. For
robotics to be born there must have been a need that presented itself for it to be met. Other than a
need, the other obstacle or challenge would have been bringing the dream to life. To ensure that
the visualization of robotics was as the real version of it after being brought to life, designing of
the various thought-out ideas was important. This is where computers came in, however, this
required a more complex of computers that would have been able to have designs in computer
systems. Once the designs were in place, it was important to find a realistic approach of taking
the designs from just being drawings on a computer to having them in practical means, which
now brought forth the idea of engineering in the project and having a connection between
engineering and computer science. In this case, the connection between engineering and
computer science is inevitable (Leng & Sharrock, 2012).
There are therefore, challenges that face the engineering and computer science communities
in this light. In the case of computer science, for instance, several challenges exist. These
challenges are of great impact to the business community and this has been the situation in the
past, the present and still will be in future. One of these challenges is the understanding the
behavioral patterns of the customers, mostly organizations, with regard to the purchase or buyer
behavior of the big data or cloud computing. Big data presents an availability of great storage
capacity, hardware that is specific in nature as well as the chips that come with it, which are very
affordable. The major problem of the business community is how to put this big data into use
once purchase has been done. The business people will purchase it and keep it, as a just in case
for when the use of the big data may present itself.
Practice of autonomous navigation in the case of transportation means, say, cars, planes and
drones, to name but a few. Technological advancements have allowed for the self-drive mode of
these machines as opposed to having humans direct it and help it make adjustments to the
immediate happenings in their surroundings, for instance, in the case of a person crossing the
road when it is least expected. The technological advancements in this regard have not been
tailor-made to match these expectations but the tests are still underway. Another challenge is
having natural language understanding (NLU) in the works to help with the ease in
understanding of the algorithms used so that a user will be able to understand why various
decisions made are as they are and the reasons behind them, which has not yet been done to
precision (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016).
Biotechnology is another area that is presented as a challenge with regard to handling the
various data on diseases that greatly vary in their complexity of the gene variations they have.
The great variations will be found in the case of the predictions, interactions, analysis as well as
findings in the genes presented in various cases. The final challenge with regard to computer
science is the creation of technology that remains effective, accurate, resilient, and is non-
invasive with regard to its adoption as well as having algorithms or devising them for the
purpose of data sifting and being able to understand the various patterns that have been formed.
Once such challenges are conquered, then it is possible to have the brain control external devices
from the capture and decode by computer systems. Cyber security is another challenge facing
both communities since the outsiders access the technology that has been used and probably
