Part 1: - GLOBALIZATION AS EFFECT OF SUPRANATIONALISM
Globalization is defined as rise in relations between different states this occurs through economic
interactions leading to international flow of trade, ideas and contributing to cultural diversity
among different states. It involves trade of technology, data which leads to dissemination of
knowledge and different skills. Major factors contributing to these interactions include: improved
means of transportation and advances in infrastructure used in Telecommunication (internet and
mobile phones). Globalization has four aspects these include: Migration and movement of people
from one state to the other, Trade and transactions opening up the economic interactions of these
states, Capital and investments and finally dissemination of knowledge and skills.
Supranationalism on the other hand is regarded as efforts that transcend national boundaries.
Members of a country open up their national border and allow members of closer countries to
take part in decision making roles. The countries transfer their right to manage their economic
and political affairs within their territorial boundaries without interference to a union, thus they
gain the advantages of a closer political, economic and cultural association with their neighbors.
Supranational political organization is a political union among different states or nations
whereby a negotiated power is delegated to authority by governments of member states.
Elements of supranationality include: - a significant decision making body that is independent
from the nations involved, the member states are legally obligated to comply with the decisions
made by the body and non-members are able to interact with the body directly and also have
legal obligations.
There are many multinational unions and from this map examples include: - European Union,
Commonwealth of independent states (CIS), Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN)
and Arab league. Supranational idea was mainly advocated by Albert Einstein after the atomic
bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which occurred in August 1945. Albert wanted these
organizations to control all military forces including nuclear weapons leaving out only the local
police forces. The union exercises its power given to them by member states in a sovereign
manner in that it has independent legislative, judicial and executive authorities.
The map indicates aspects of globalization through formation of international organizations
which could be economical or political organization. These organizations advocates for
promotion of democracy, advances in development, fight for human rights, propagate good
governance, and ensure gender equality and through these they achieve good relations between
neighboring countries which is essential in maintaining peace. Globalization as another aspect of
life has its merits and demerits. The merits include: - Growing interdependences of nation
whereby the developing countries offer raw materials and human resources needed in
manufacturing of goods while the developed nations bring to the table capita, technology and
brain power needed in production of goods. Second advantage is goods produced in different
nations are of good quality this is mainly due to global competition, thus for one to remain in the
make they have to have outstanding products. Demerits include job insecurities whereby the

developed countries have outsourced all their jobs leaving them unemployed. Another
disadvantage of globalization include fluctuation in prices of goods due to increase competition,
a country like china produces cheap goods forcing all other countries interested in the market to
lower their prices leading to decreased profits made.
The effect of globalization on nation state has become a big question to everyone around the
world as the earth becomes a global village. Nation state is a form of political organization
whereby homogenous population inhabits a sovereign state. Globalization’s impact on the state
is a debatable argument with three main plays: - Hyperglobalist, skeptical and the
transformationalists. The hyperglobalist argue that world has evolved over time and has become
a borderless place and the function of the national government is merely to link different
countries for global capital (King and Kendall P, 144). The skeptical differ from the
hyperglobalist in that they say that the states remains in control and it is the center of business
activities whose powers majorly in domestic economy and in international agreement. The state
maintains its role of governance. The transformationalists take a middle ground and state that the
state is as important as before in maintaining the global political economy.
Part 2: -
Quote: Refugees have to move if they are to save their lives or preserve their freedom. They have
no protection from their own stateindeed it is often their own government that is threatening to
persecute them.” [The UN], slide #41
Concept: Refugees run from their countries due to forced mobility whereby a person is forced to
leave their motherland due to ongoing armed conflicts and persecutions. They situations in their
countries are so intolerable and they fly to other countries in search of safety and peace. This
quote basically states the reasons why refugees move from their countries. It portrays the
government of this countries from which people run from are the reason behind the conflicts.
This is contrary to what the functions of the government are, to protect its citizens and maintain
peace and unit in a country.
Comparison: Refugees are people who have ran from their different countries due to unfavorable
conditions, in my opinion these people should be received with uttermost hospitality due to the
psychological trauma they have under gone. There are laws that protect the refugees and these
includes: - Right to basic human needs, protection from danger they are running from and right
to live in dignity and safety. UNHCR and other non-governmental organizations work closely
with countries and support them to implement their responsibilities of ensuring refugees are
comfortable while in their states.
Questions: What are the reasons that lead to people fleeing from their country? What means do
these refugees use to run away from their countries? Why does a government decide to threaten
to persecute its own citizens? What measures are used to deal with a country that makes the
situation in the country intolerable? How do we ensure that the rights of refugees are observed?
