Question 1
Age & Gender
Age is one of the crucial factors that influence vulnerability to a point that it may lead to
a risk of a disaster happening. High rates of casualties are usually found amongst the sick people,
the children, and the most elderly people. Also, as we compare men and women, we can see that
women are usually most vulnerable to a risk in contrast to the men when a disaster has taken
place. This is because a disaster may happen in a situation where a woman is pregnant then how
can that woman run or escape the disaster? High chances will be that the woman will suffer
greatly from the effects of that disaster. The main attention of the Disaster Management Program
is to ensure that it has rescued and provided sufficient health care to the children, the women, the
elderly adults, and the sick when a disaster has taken place.
Poverty
It has been acknowledged that the poor people who mostly live in the slums are usually in
great chances of being vulnerable to the risk of a disaster. This is usually because most of the
people who live in the slum have no access to a healthy and safe place, most of them are not
educated, and also they may not be aware that a risk of a disaster is about to take place. In all
time the disaster management program should ensure that it has all its attention to this poor
population (McElreath, Jensen, Wigginton, Nations & Van, 2013).
