Introductions

Case study: This is a situation in which you are a practitioner and a mother walks in into

your office having a child who complains of flu-like symptoms. You then ask the little boy to

remove his shirt and you realize that the boy’s body has got some pattern of distinct bruises

majorly on the body torso (Shnier et. al. 2016). You then ask the mother where the bruises

emanated from. The mother responds to you that the bruises are from the procedure she

performed on the boy known as “chichi", which is also referred to as "coining" (Shnier et. al.

2016). The mother goes ahead to elaborate that the procedure involves rubbing of the worm gel

or oil on an individual’s outer skin using a coin. She continues by explaining further that chichi

is used to remove or raise out any bad blood in the body to allow proper blood circulation and an

above all it heals. You decide to touch the boy with the stethoscope and the boy because of pain

from the effects of the bruises, he winces. You later decide to report the mother to the authority

(Shnier et. al. 2016).

Ethical Principles

Autonomy: Also known as the self-rule which is also the patient most basic right. It is

then in order for the medical practitioner to accord patient maximum right in his decision

(Cowley, 2012). It is also important to know that, the autonomous decisions usually based on the

individual’s value, adequate information, freedom from coercion, and much more. In the

scenario above, a parent has a right to take care of her child in the manner she sees best.
