Tony Reseck`s Experience

Tony Reseck of Windemere Hotel remembers an encounter with a girl who had red hair.

Miss Cressy was her name. She had rented a place to lie down for a while at the hotel. One day,

he found her sandwiched between many cushions listening to loud jams in the radio room. The

look on her eyes almost scared him but he engaged her in a conversation to break the silence

between them. They began talking about musicians; Goodman and Mozart were the topics. Miss

Cressy thought she was in trouble, but he told her that she had to go out and get some fresh air

for she had stayed indoors for too long. This made him tell her of a girl who never talked to

anyone but after paying her bill, she went down using the balcony and died. She told him that she

was waiting for a tall dark guy who would be looking for her. The death paralyzed the hotel`s

operations as once business was booming but after the suicide, people developed a negative

impression of the place.

The following day Tony had a surprise meeting with people that the porter suspected to

be Tony`s enemies for they only wished to meet him secretly (Chandler, 1995). A tall guy

cautioned Tony that Miss Gressy was bad news and he had to kick her out of the hotel before he

got himself into trouble. He explained to Tony that Miss Cressy was involved with Johnny Ralls,

who had committed several murders and she was the one responsible for his actions. Tony

agreed to kick her out after hearing the whole case. Tony quickly went to the hotel only to find

Johnny Ralls, identifying himself as Mr. James Watterson, holding a gun in room 14B. Johnny

Ralls was looking for Miss Cressy. They had a lengthy conversation and Tony managed to

convince Johnny that Miss Cressy was not at the hotel. Tony found Miss Cressy in the radio

room. He let him spend the night there. He later gave the clerk five bucks thinking that he had
