DELOITTE’S CYBER ATTACK

In the 25th of September 2017, one of the top-rated accounting firms in the US, Deloitte,

had been stylishly hacked by a hacker that threatened to expose all the confidential emails and

also the plans of the biggest clients of the firm. Deloitte which is a company registered in

London and the global headquarters are located in New York was held to its knees by a cyber-

security attack that had been going on for months unnoticed. The company is among the largest

private firms in America with a record reported last year of $37 billion in revenues. The private

firm offers auditing services, offers tax consultancy. Interestingly, Deloitte offers advanced

cyber-security advice to top government agencies, multinational companies, media houses, large

banks and even pharmaceutical companies (Hopkins, 2017).

Deloitte’s clients in all of its sectors had data in the firm email system that had been

accessed illegally. The clients include the US government departments and household names.

Until then, six clients of Deloitte’s had been notified that they had been hacked and that the

internal review was taking place. Despite the hack being realized in 2017, it is believed that

hackers had access to their data as early as October last year. The attacker had hacked the

administrator’s account which in turn gave them unlimited access to all the other areas (Hopkins,

2017).

The hackers had maximized the weakness of the system which was that the account only

required just one password to gain access to the system. The attackers had access to all the

usernames, passwords, health information, architectural diagrams and IP addresses of the clients

and staff. Some of the emails even had very sensitive security details.
