HISTORY
History
Primarily, the story is based on a black girl (Elizabeth) who studies at Little Rock Central
High School in the year 1957. A white girl (Hazel Bryan) 15 years old but many people thought
she was older than that is seen shouting at the black girl. Elizabeth was trying to enter central
High school when the soldiers at the gate stopped her from getting into the school. She had to
walk back with fear towards the bus station. Hazel was the daughter of a disables war veteran;
she was largely political even in race matters. She was in the crowd that morning when Elizabeth
was denied entry, shouting to get noticed.
Elizabeth and other Black students in Central faced a harsh year and then many years
passed with prejudice, trauma from the experience, family tragedy and poverty kept her away
from realizing her potential. During this time in the United States, Blacks were highly
discriminated as seen in this story. The Whites felt they were superior to the blacks and thus they
had more power than the black and that is why the white girl was shouting at Elizabeth. Hazel
felt more powerful because of her white race and more so because of her parents who were
involved in a world war, she saw as if they had power due the recognition of her parents.
Additionally, Hazel had a lot of resiliency and courage to shout at other races; she felt
like a queen because her family was financially stable and was provided with security. These
factors resemble power in their family because almost all powerful people in the world are rich
and have security. A few years later Elizabeth was able to make her life and later came at peace
with herself. On the other hand, Hazel was struggling to make peace with the public because the
picture of her shouting at Elizabeth was now in history books. She was really disturbed and
sometimes she had to cry because of her past.
