ROSA PARKS 2
Rosa Parks
Racial segregation was a predominant issue in the mid-20
th
century, and Rosa Parks
defied all odds to initiate a movement aimed at pushing for racial equality in the US. Her
bravado was outstanding considering the inferiority of her gender. Whites were deemed to be
superior to a set of defined privileges over other minority groups in the society (Kohl & Brown,
2007). The blacks and other inferior groups, on the other hand, did not take any initiative to
upend this situation and push for racial equality. However, this can be attributed to the stringent
measures deployed to combat rebels.
On the first day of December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her heat to a white man on
a Montgomery bus (Kohl & Brown, 2007). Blacks were supposed to surrender their seats to
whites without questioning, but Rosa was ready to defy these odds. Their place was usually at
the rear part of the vehicle where they would not mix with the whites. Rosa Parks was arrested as
a result of defying the set orders, and this sparked diverging views who considered such act as
discourteous and lack of human dignity to black Americans.
Very few women were daring enough to do what Rosa Parks did, and this explains why
she was awarded the title of mother of civil rights movement. She vowed to dedicate her time
and resources to fight for the rights of the minority groups in the society. This was an audacious
move that initiated nationwide civil rights campaigns aimed at pushing for racial equality in the
US. Rosa Parks also represents brave women in the society who are ready to defy set customs
that undermine their freedom of expression (Theoharis, 2015). She did what many men in
Alabama of other states in the US wouldn’t during the mid-19
th
century. Rosa Parks is a perfect
representation of civil rights activists who are ready to fights for the rights of minority groups in
the society.
