Share three concepts you learned or discovered in this course and how you envision applying them to
your future work as a nurse leader
A leader must have a well-defined work ethic, values, and beliefs. Managers must value the traits of
trustworthiness and trust, empowerment and delegation, consistency and mentorship. Employees take into
account the ethical behavior of managers when establishing their trust in the organization (Huddleston,
2014). Therefore, I will lead by example. I realize that what I do is more important than what I say. As a
leader, I will be the hardest worker, the most well-prepared and the one willing to do all the things no one
else wants to do.
Nursing vision and leadership style is vital to success. Transformational leadership theory stresses the
importance of interpersonal relationships in effecting change and motivating individuals’ desire, values,
and goals toward a common goal of constant improvement and efficiency (Luzinski, 2011). Quantum
leadership is dynamic, continually evolving, changeable, and focuses more on interactions and
interrelations than a hierarchical framework (Dargahi, 2013). As a nursing leader I will have a grand
vision by combining both of these leadership styles. I will inspire and motivate my team to tremendous
effect by communicating a vision in a clear, straight-forward way.
Lastly, I will not accept toxic behaviors. I will practice what I preach. I believe that if I am competent as a
leader and I am very good at what I do, I will inspire others to follow me and trust my judgement. I will
empower and give my team members as much autonomy as possible. I will not micro-manage because
doing so will not facilitate innovative solutions to a problems and effective and transparent
communication by team members. Toxic behaviors that are disruptive and impede cohesiveness will be
addressed immediately and will not be tolerated. Culture is created and I will create a culture of respect
and teamwork.
