ARTICLE COMPASRISON 2
In the article Speech Communities by Paul Roberts, geography has played an important
role in the foundation of how a person is and the outer shell that defines the person. He
references to the impact of communities has played a role in language development. This is very
relatable and logical. For that reason, he explains that there is no specific accepted way of talking
or communicating. It is evident that language changes over time due to the generation factor. In
one of his examples, he focuses on the British English and the American English. He explains
how the American English is closer to the style of Shakespeare English in comparison to the
British English. This makes absolute sense as new communities would strive to keep their
tradition burning or alive in new surroundings (Roberts, 2013).
Andrew Sullivan, on the other hand, faced a struggle to blend in with the American
community. Andrew is a British, but he focuses on American politics. Sullivan becomes an
American civil-rights pioneer after he was said to be a foreigner who didn’t know or have a right
to write about foreign countries and their politics in association with America. He started off not
knowing much about America, but he had a beautiful image of how it is (The Dish, 2017).
These two articles both come from the point of social and community acceptance despite
the background. Robert who was addressing all those people who have a different socio-
economic background but still have a slot in the community (Roberts, 2013). Sullivan was
addressing all the racist people in the media who thought that he didn’t have a chance in writing
articles and shining a light on American politics, which he was and still is good at; they
undermined his potential (The Dish, 2017).
