Improving Employee Engagement and Alignment in Today’s Organizations
Globalization and development of new technologies as witnessed in the current world
have rendered the traditional command-and-control approach to management as ineffective.
Consequently, managers have been forced to revisit how they communicate and control the flow
of information within an organization. Smart leaders of today have embraced interpersonal
conversation with their employees as opposed to a command based way of communication
(Groysberg, 1).
Interpersonal conversation is characterized by four elements that tend to reinforce and
coalesce around each other. They include; intimacy, inclusion, interactivity, and intentionality.
When there is conversational intimacy at all levels, those in authority earn the trust of those
under them. An intimate listening and communication culture changes focus from the traditional
top-down flow of orders to a bottom-to-up exchange of ideas (Groysberg, 5).The much essential
mental and emotional closeness between leaders and their employees can be reached through a
series of processes as listed:
Getting close involves less of issuing orders to more of holding discussions

with their employees

Listening well Leaders should know when to listen and act to what their employees are
saying. Furthermore, listening makes everyone feel respected.
Getting personal leaders should welcome concerns from their employees as well as
solicit the feedback of their own performance.
Promoting dialogue; interactivity - the leadership should strive to ‘talk with’ their
employees as oppose to ‘talking to’ them
It is important to empower the people that work deep within an organization where the
development and testing of new products occur. This is a sure way to bolster the company’s
reputation. Employees should be placed on the front line when it comes to decision making as
well as marketing. For maximum productivity, however, the intimate conversation should be
held with the clear intentionality of achieving specific goals (Groysberg, 9).
