Ethical and Policy Factors in Care Coordination
Introduction
Care Coordination plays a crucial role in healthcare. The practice ensures positive patient
outcomes and the success of the healthcare system. Coordination of care involves the
synchronization of patient care that various specialists and providers deliver. AHRQ (2018)
indicates that care coordination in primary care practice organizes patient care activities and
facilitates sharing relevant information to promote safe and effective care. Ideally, care
coordination fosters teamwork and collaboration between physicians and nurses. It also directs
patient-centered practices that focus on meeting their needs and preferences (AHRQ, 2018).
However, government policies and ethical factors affect the implementation and success of care
coordination activities. For instance, nurses are regulated by a nursing code of ethics that
influences the coordination of care. Any violation of these ethical provisions negatively impacts
the continuum of care. As such, this presentation examines the impact of ethical and policy
factors in care coordination and continuum in homeless shelters.
Homeless Shelters
Homelessness has become a public issue in the United States. The increasing number of
homeless people in the community raises health concerns. Homeless shelters have been
established to provide supportive services and stabilize people with mental health and substance
abuse disorders (SAMHSA, 2021). Notably, a lack of affordable housing in major cities, poverty,
and high unemployment have increased homelessness. Similarly, homelessness is caused by risk
factors like divorce, domestic violence, mental and substance abuse disorders, and disability
(SAMHSA, 2021). Homeless shelters provide emergency and transitional housing for homeless
people. These organizations also extend permanent supportive housing and housing to persons
