Rhetoric Analysis: Single Motherhood
Parenting is one of the most difficult tasks a human being is tasked with. Most people
attribute the behaviors of people to be directly borrowed from their parents or within the family.
At a greater extent, this can be regarded as true due to the fact that children tend to look up to
their parents during parenthood. However, single parenthood has not been left out of a
comparison battle as to what gender an efficiently and beautifully parent their children into better
beings than the other. Single motherhood has been a center of the punching bag concerning
matters parenting (Miller, 34). Single fatherhood can be more commanding and the children can
still remain to be morally upright as the case in both parents being there. Single motherhood on
the other side has however been criticized as of low moral values and commanding nature from
the top family head. The situation however can be a mix up of foggy facts. Single motherhood
falls nothing short of fatherhood parenting and nothing much from both parents being present.
Katie Roiphe comes in with a stance at the beginning of her argument, ‘In Defense of
Single Motherhood’, claiming that the notion that single parenting is a societal problem is just a
wild guess that has built up and needs to be checked (Roiphe 58). Single motherhood parenting
has long been termed as one that lacks the moral foundations, directional steering of the male
and detached relationships. These and many other reasons have however remained as myths that

have the probability to be debunked at any moment. There have been myriads of challenges that
the woman is burdened with or at least believed to be experiencing in tending to her children
whom many people and researchers deem to be fatal. Sadly, black single mother have been the
most targeted group of single mothers (Elliot 3). The absence of the father in the family has been
termed as the opening to making the children not receive the authoritative direction of urgency in
some life situations. Katie continues to argue that terming single mother irresponsible and
dangerous remains to be a vague point and has only been sanitized by shoddy unreliable research
over the past years (Roiphe 59). The problem of single motherhood is one that is filled with
grave myths and misconceptions that tend to discourage many single mothers and especially the
black single mothers of the efforts to try and raise an intact family.
The problems are actually not too grave to be easily reconciled with the appropriate
solutions within the family. Single mother have often used the energetic support and masculine
advantage of the eldest brother to instill a form of father presence in the family. This is able to
partially cover the void left out by the fatherly love and all the benefits that the children tend to
have gained from the presence of their male parent (Elliot, 5). In Lunsfords ‘Everything’s an
Argument, the male gender has been given very many stereotypic advantages compared to the
female gender (Lunsford 662). The female gender has however not been deemed to be unfit to
take up such roles and in some cases, it is the women who are able to bring out the best out of
their children. There has been no substantial research conducted aimed at establishing whether
fathers have more parenting skills than mother or vice versa. The notion as to single fatherhood
is better than single motherhood parenting becomes null and void and should be disregarded as a
false narrative.
