PERSUASIVE ADVERTISING
Persuasive advertising
Examples of persuasive advertising that might (or did) go too far with their message
South Eastern train advert showing a lady’s backside with information that the
transportation service offers comfort and care should be taken during extreme weather condition.
Viacom refused to deal with breast cancer fund over a mastectomy scar on an advert.
The message crossed the line between effective persuasion and unfair deceptive practices as
follows;
Women are viewed negatively by the society as materials. Women are an equal human
being who is supposed to be respected just like men in the society. It is imperative to address the
moral aspect of the message to convince consumers of the need to purchase a particular product
or service. Effective persuasion is expected to involve critical thinking of an individual character
so that decision made is ethical and wise. Using women to encourage usage of railway transport
system creates division among customers. Potential customers who are of male gender will feel
discriminated as they are not involved in any decision-making process. Women behind is a
private affair that should barely be talked on a mainstream media. The decay of morals is
negative to the society and would not be tolerated at any front.
Advert pictures should be sensitive of the society so not to pass the unintended message.
Nudity is discouraged on a national platform. Women who had passed through mastectomy
would feel offended once they view the advert on mainstream media. In as much as it is relevant
to highlight the breast cancer causes, appropriate messages should be used to persuade
segmented market. It is painful for segmented target clients to think of their departed family
