The Role of Assessment in Education
When a student undergoes assessment, the teacher gains valuable insight into what the
students understand and the mode of instruction that is most effective. That sort of information is
beneficial, especially when the instructor wants to adapt the lesson plans and course content
presentation to the needs of the class/child. It is even more important when the students have
learning and physical disabilities.
Assessment is a necessary part of the learning experience itself. When students conduct
an objective evaluation of the learning environment and the relevance of the content to their
interests, they gain knowledge on the content itself. It is only from that premise that the students
can suggest or bring innovations into the curriculum. In this way, the learners take more
responsibility for the scope of their learning (Lindley, 2009). That is good for education because
the students will only give direction in those areas where they have particular talents. It is a
viable methodology for learning environments in homogenous pools of talent. An example of
this is a music club or a DIY club.
The third, and perhaps most important role of assessment in the educational cycle is the
advisory role it plays to all the stakeholders in the school environment. Assessment performs
necessary analysis in all aspects of schooling. Parents and guardians get concrete and actionable
information from these reports. Teachers and school administrations too can discern the best
approaches and respond accordingly (Lindley, 2009).
