Servant leaders
Leadership describes the ability of the management of an organization to set and realize
challenging goals, arrive at decisive and swift actions, inspire others to outperform themselves,
as well as outperform its competitors. It is difficult to put a value on leadership aspects or other
qualities of an organization relative to the quantitative aspect which can be tracked in order to
compare organizations. Individuals who possess strong leadership skills in the business
community are usually found in the executive level of management such COO, CEO, and CFO
(Dennis et al.).
Servant leadership describes a leadership philosophy whereby an individual engages with
other people, either a fellow employee or in a management capacity, with the intent of achieving
authority but not power. The individual in the position of power intends to enhance the welfare
of those that they lead. Servant leadership entails the person portraying characteristics of
listening, stewardship, empathy, and commitment to the personal growth of those around them.
However, servant leadership attempts to move personal interaction and management away from
activities seen to exercise control and towards synergistic relationship among the involved
parties. Servant leadership starts with a natural feeling of wanting to serve and to serve first. A
conscious choice then motivates one’s aspirations to lead. A servant leader focuses on others’
needs, especially the members of the team, before considering his/hers.
A servant leader acknowledges perspectives of other people, gives them the much-needed
support in order to meet their personal and work goals, engages them in making decisions, and
cultivates a sense oneness among the team members (Dennis et al.). This results in more trust,
higher engagement, and increase innovation, as well as, stronger relationships with the team and
other people involved.
The focus of a servant leader is the service to other people around them. Servant
leadership starts with a vision for offering a resource such as public service, education or
employment and implores a leader to have optimism with empathy for other people in different
situations. A servant leader is able to identify difficult problems and be able to offer pragmatic
and timely solutions through prior planning. Servant leadership attends to relationships and
responsibilities of the involved parties and embodies each aspect of their activities, from building
successful businesses to cultivating healthy communities. In this regard, it involves placing the
needs of other individuals at the forefront of every business, agency, organization, and
institution.
Effective servant leaders are persistent, self-actualizing, constructive, and motivating.
Due to their visionary nature, servant leaders acknowledge what it entails to change course and

explore different opportunities. Additionally, they amber strong determination to solve complex
challenges in their workplace, by turning adversity into wisdom thereby motivating those that
