Subject: Application for a Position as an Operations Consultant

I am hereby applying for the above-mentioned position at your esteemed company. Upon

completion of my degree, I was able to do several projects which are quite relevant to this position

and the ideas from these projects would also be of great importance to the whole organization. One

of these projects incorporated the lean technique which basically helps in cost saving by

eliminating wastes. It also provides unique competitive advantages to the organization. This lean

technique was applied to an organization referred to as 3M so as to analyze its performance. The

3M organization is well known for its products which creates a positive difference in everyone’s

life. A more improved methodology, the lean six sigma was used. This methodology works at

improving quality, compliance, productivity and speed of operations. The implementation of lean

six sigma was so successful. 3M recorded great improvement in terms of operational efficiency

and product yields, reduction of wastes and reduction in amounts of energy used. The lean

technique helped this organization in many ways. To begin with, there was a creation of deeper

connections within the organization and all departments were closely linked. Secondly, due to the

ability to save costs, the organization was able to afford additional technology development,

launching of new products as well as the ability to finance new start-ups and offset inflation.

Finally, the company has been able to reduce energy consumption, wastes, and air emissions. Cost

saving has made implementation of several innovative projects possible. There has been a

significant improvement in the quality of products. Organizations not using the lean technique

have been analyzed and found that huge backlog of seven to nine months gets created. These

companies waste a lot of materials due to the manual measurements and estimated cuts to the

material. Therefore six sigma for 3M has proved to be reliable and can be used as a routine

globally.

I did another project whose aim was to analyze the time between the customers placing an

order, authorizing the order to the time the products are delivered to them. These project

incorporated statistical process control methods which involve the collection of data for purposes

of evaluating monitor and control a process. A company known as Steel Bars which manufactures

steel rods used for various construction activities was used as a case study. The project required

that orders of all clients to be dispatched within 48 hours from the time the request for supply is

made. This must occur in 90% of orders. The statistical process control methods are employed to

ensure that products are delivered to the customers as fast as possible. This will enhance client’s

satisfaction, loyalty, and trust in the company. It is possible that delays occur during the delivering

process and it is the statistical process control that will help in identifying reasons for these delays.

Once the reasons for delays have been identified, measures will be put in place to ensure that the

same does not happen in future. Six Sigma also helps in identifying reasons for delays in delivering
