The contemporary society has witnessed a massive shift in culture. For example, today
pop culture has been on the increase especially among the youth, and it is having massive
impacts on the lives of the young people and our society at large. This has been enhanced by the
technological advancement where it has become easy to share and access information through
the use of the new technology such as internet with other people from different geographical
regions. This paper, therefore, seeks to explore the influence of television and film on the
American culture and values. It will examine both the positive and negative influences as well as
show how the media is a reflection of behavior and attitudes of the society.
Films and Television Influence on Culture and Values of Americans
The media, in general, has had several impacts on the American culture and values. For
example, televisions and film have been on the forefront when it comes to influencing the
American culture and values, especially among the youth. In this golden age of television, many
young people are living differently from what is expected of them. Televisions became dominant
in the US society in the early 1960s with around 90% of the households having at least one set of
television. This dominance finally caught up with culture, and since then, the US society has
been to a larger extend influenced by the mass media (Campbell, Martin & Fabos, 2014).
Television has shaped the American culture and values through the way people values the media
in the current society. For example, it has become daily activities for people to watch televisions
every day in the evening to watch the news and get to know the global happenings. This has
changed the way people used to be before TVS become popular. Additionally, the use of
television has changed business approach among the Americans. Today, there are few firms
which carry out a personal advertisement and instead, that culture has been replaced by the use
of televisions to advertise products and services. This has affected the Americans’ value and is
