Explain the structure of the U.S. Supreme Court and the requirements that must be met to be
nominated as a U.S. Supreme Court justice
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land, which takes its powers from articles I and III
of the federal constitution. These articles as outlined assert that the judicial power of the united
states shall be vested in one supreme court as well as inferior courts which the Congress will be
able to establish when deemed necessary based on the judiciary act of 1789. The court is headed
by the chief justice, and eight associate judges who have equal voting powers on matters brought
before the court (Groenleer, 2015). Each justice of the Supreme Court including chief justice is
nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. The structure of the court is aimed to
ensure that there is a better focus on the overall understanding of important elements, which are
brought forward. It is the final expositor of the constitution of the United States, and it is focused
on making decisions based on the constitution as well as the overall wellbeing of the United
States citizens. The Supreme also marks the boundaries of the existing authority of the national
and state government (California, 2011).
The supreme through its significant independence in law have been able to make some important

requirements, which anyone seeking to be nominated to the Supreme Court position must have.
The constitution does not provide any regulations in place regarding the requirements of being a
justice of the Supreme Court. However, there are some requirements that have been put in place.
This means that even an individual to become a justice is not required to have a degree in law.
However the fact that it is the Senate which confirms the nominations to justice positions, there
are key considerations that are put in place which include individual experience and background
since an individual must have a clean background (Hague, 2010).
