Conflict Management
The term hegemony is used to describe the state of being very powerful in a given situation or
place. A good example is exercising power over fellow employees due to your supreme
dominance. A social group with dominance often rule over the others. Sometimes, hegemony can
lead to cultural conflicts.
I have witnessed a cultural conflict at Star Electronics. Star electronics is our family business.
The firm has fourteen employees. Three of the employees are from France and are fluent in the
French language, six are from the US, two from Mexico and the rest from Portugal. Of late, the
rate of sales has been going down, and I was allocated the task of finding out what was the cause.
After research, I discovered that there was a misunderstanding among these employees due to
their different cultures and nationalities. For instance, during short breaks for tea or Lunch, I
found out that the crew was divided into groups according to the language they spoke. The
French made jokes in their language, and such annoyed the others since they could not figure out
what was being discussed. Instead, some thought they were the subject of discussion. The same
applied to the Portuguese and the Mexicans. Each group wanted their presence to be felt in the
atmosphere; competing for power.

The primary cause of the conflict is the poor coordination in the hierarchy structure. With the
ability to exercise power over the employees, the human resource department failed to enforce
organizational culture and ethics to govern the employees. After assigning people with jobs, it is
good to work hand in hand with their concerned departments to ensure that everything is moving
smoothly. Failure to use power might lead to conflicts since people will do things according to
their will, something which might cause cultural disputes, just like in the case of Star Electronics.
Upon discovering the issue, several measures were put in place to help solve the cultural conflict.
Such included:
Introduction of ethics education by the management. This is to make the employee
understand the significance of good relations in the work environment.
Proposing English as the only language to be used during work hours since it is the only
language which all can at least understand.
The above methods have proved to work well. Despite a few challenges such as some not being
able to speak fluent English, this is a success to the institution. Sales are again rising. With
ethics, most are now able to understand the need for organizational culture rather than individual
cultures (Alvesson, p.17). The use of a standard language has promoted teamwork. With these
implementations, the management is confident that the challenge will no longer pose threats to
the organization.
