Blood Brothers documentary review
Blood brothers is a Netflix documentary that sheds more light on the relationship between
two great black men, a championship boxer Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, a popular civil
rights activist. The two men were directly linked by being contemporaries and close friends;
unfortunately, their friendship was short-lived due to different facts highlighted by the
documentary. The film was directed by Marcus A. Clarke and produced by Kenya Barris. It is an
informative and engaging documentary that explains how two historic icons fought closely
against racist culture and encouraged freedom of black minds in the 1960s and later a drift that
ended their relationship. The documentary is inspired by the book authored by Robert Randy and
Jonny Smith, “Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X"
The film incorporates archival videos of two historical individuals who encouraged black
supremacy and brought out insights as Black men in American society (Roberts & Smith, 2016).
Clarke captures the viewer's attention by outlining both Cassius Clay's story and that of Malcolm
X in a palatable manner and then to a larger context where they meet. Blood Brothers helps us
see the significance of the connection of Ali and X as it revolutionized racism and helped black
people speak up against white supremacy; their relationships brought about the need for freedom
and equality.
The composition of scenes incorporates animated sequences for storytelling to bring out a
clear view of the real scene in the 1950s and 1960 s where the movie is based. The 90miute
documentary takes us through a roller-coaster of events, speeches, interviews, and video clips. It
brings us a vivid picture of the racial eras where two iconic black men meet by destiny and how
their connection collapsed, and how their contact revolutionized how black people existed in the
1960s. Both Malcolm X and Muhamad Ali stood confidently against white supremacy and spoke
