SCANDAL AT PENN STATE 2
Question 1: Summary of key facts and issues
The Penn State scandal involved one Jerry Sandusky and four other top officials of the
university including Graham B. Spanier, Gary C. Schultz, Timothy M. Curley and Joseph V.
Paterno. Sandusky other than being a good coach and a charitable person, he was also a child
molester and rapist whose deeds went unpunished for many years. Sandusky allegedly used his
position at the university and the university facilities to sexually abuse children. Evidence
suggests that the four top university officials knew about Sandusky’s bad side but never talked
about it outside the confines of their whispers. In fact, these officials including Spanier, Schultz,

Penn State campus. As such Sandusky continued to molest more children yet nothing happed to
him or the children he sexually assaulted. However, the narrative changed in 2001 when Mike
McQueary witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy. McQueary had engaged
the four top officials who also engaged the administration of The Second Mile charity
organization founded by Sandusky (Freeh et al., 2012). Even after this incident the board of
trustees was kept in the dark. In 2011 a formal probe was launched on Jerry Sandusky. The
