PSCYHOLOGY AS A SCIENCE
Psychology has always been a widely misunderstood field. Putting aside the hardships it
went through to actually be recognized as a legitimate independent study, even today it is often
exaggerated and falsely advertised in a way such that it is constantly misconceived by the
general public. Oxford dictionaries defines the term ‘psychology’ as “the scientific study of the
human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context, synonyms;
study of the mind.” First and foremost, psychology is a science. It is a unique science, at that. It
coheres to the three defining features of science, by using systematic empiricism, producing
public knowledge, and examining solvable problems. (Stanovich, 2009)
“Systematic Empiricism” is the method of evaluating knowledge that is gained from
sense-experience in an orderly manner. It is the key feature of all sciences, and psychology is no
exception. Psychology, in specific, seeks to understand behavior. Knowledge about a new
concept is gained through starting with an empirical question that can be answered through
surveillance. Theories are presented as plausible answers to those inquiries, thus allowing
predictions to be made and tested. Consequently, questions are critiqued for their solvability
which can vary relative to the development of scientific resources at the given time. This implies
that mysteries, i.e. unsolvable problems, can eventually evolve into solvable predicaments as
science advances. Some concepts that were deemed impossible to verify a century ago are, are
easily verifiable with today’s technology.
Explanations are easier said than done. Once we have a theory, how do we know that it is
correct? Typically, it isn’t that straightforward, and we start with making sure that, at least, it
isn’t wrong. Therefore, theories must indicate criterion for potential disconfirmation.
Alternatively, if a concept is not falsifiable, then neither is it confirmable. Thus, a prediction
derived from the theory must indicate what will happen if it is true, and what will happen if it is
