C229 Task 2 Social Media Campaign
Field Experience Topic: Obesity Prevention and Reduction among teenagers
Community Health Nursing Statement: Increased risk of obesity among teenagers, adults
and elders related to dietary and lifestyle choices as demonstrated by above average
body mass index (BMI) rates.
Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death that significantly affects
teenagers in the United States. Public health professionals contend that obesity is an epidemic
among youths due to poor diet and lifestyle choices (Stanford Children's Health, 2019).
Health disparities in teenage obesity manifest depending on the community socioeconomic
status with teens in the lower SES communities exhibiting higher rate of obesity than those
belonging to higher SES communities (Balentine & Stoppler, 2019). In the community, there
are significant resources that support prevention of teenage obesity such as physical activity
community strategies, healthy food service guidelines, salad bars in schools, and early care
and education, among other programs.
According to CDC, teenage obesity is a serious health problem affecting
approximately 13.5 million people between the ages of 6 and 19 years. It is estimated that 1
in 5 young people has obesity in the United States. Obesity prevalence is about 18.9%,

19.9%, and 10.9% among teenagers in in the low, middle, and high income groups,
respectively (CDC, 2019). Obesity is attributed to several causative factors such as individual
behavioral and physiological characteristics that include genetics and physical activity. Some
of the behavioral aspects associated with obesity consist of physical inactivity, medications,
food choices, and other exposures. Other contributing factors include genetics, unhealthy
food promotions, psychological factors (stress and emotional aspects), and the level of food
intake as well as physical activity. Besides, obesity is a complex health concern due to the
connection with reduced quality of life, poorer mental health outcomes, and other health
problems that are major causes of death (CDC, 2019).
Social Media Campaign Strategy
A community health nursing social media campaign strategy is integral to the
prevention of obesity and promotion of appropriate behavioral approaches such as physical
activity and nutrition that can curb the prevalence of obesity among teenagers. A
multichannel message strategy based on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, Snapchat, Blogs, and YouTube can address various risk factors associated with
teenage obesity. Besides, population-focused social marketing interventions such as Shape
Up Galveston County (SUGC) and the VERB campaign are significant in addressing the
current highly prevalent childhood and teenage obesity. Shape Up Galveston County (SUGC)
is an intervention that is based on the community in the prevention and reduction of teenage
obesity by altering school, household, and community environments (Coffield, Nihiser,
Sherry, & Economos, 2015). Furthermore, VERB campaign is a social marketing
intervention based on multifaceted commercial marketing methods that address obesity
among teens and children by increasing and maintaining their physical activity.
Facebook is a social media platform that I would use to implement obesity prevention
intervention among teenagers by improving their eating habits or food choices as well as
