Food Patterns in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Food or dietary patterns can be described as the quality, variety, and quantity, or a
combination of various foods and beverages in a given diet and their consumption rate.
Markedly, food patterns are developed to determine the eating habits of people within a given
area. Habitual consumption is often influenced by culture and the availability of specific food in
an area (Beck, 2020). This essay seeks to determine and analyze the dietary patterns in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, it aims to identify gaps in proper dietary patterns in the
country.
Food Pattern
Current Food Patterns in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia, like most other countries, has experienced significant changes in its
demographics and lifestyles, which have impactful effects on the food choice and intake of the
entire population (Adam, Osama & Ibra. 2014). The current food pattern in Saudi is shifting
towards increased saturated fat intake, especially animal products. Low consumption of complex
carbohydrates and higher energy content in food. Saudis are traditional people and prefer to keep
their way of life alive for ages. Staple foods include rice, chicken, dates, fava beans, yogurt, and
wheat.
Dietary Gaps
Wheat represents the majority of cereal consumption in the country, contributing over
forty percent (40%) to food energy and another forty-two (42%) proteins ("Global Nutrition
Report," 2021). Rice is also at the top of the list, with an average consumption of 150 g/day (43
kg/year). Additionally, chicken and lamb are consumed with rice or bread, making it a favorite
among the locals (Kasbah). Notably, the consumption of green vegetables and fish together with
sources of vegetable oil is generally low in the country. Much of the fish is from the sea and is
mostly consumed by the coast of the Red Sea.
Healthy Age group
Recent studies in the nutritional intake in Saudi Arabia have indicated that millennials
(age 17-29) are the healthiest in the country. This conclusion has been achieved due to the
following reasonsfirst, diverse nutritional intake. Millennials' idea of experimentation has
enabled them to try out different types of food and thus have a higher nutritional intake
prevalence over other age groups.
