Quality management system (QMS) and structure-process-outcome (SPO) are two
models that measure and define quality outcome in different ways. According to QMS, the
quality outcome is measured by the level of customer satisfaction. QMS focuses on achieving the
demands of customers and improving their satisfaction. In a bid to measure quality outcome,
QMS makes an effort to oversee activities that are deemed essential in attaining the desired level
of quality.
On the other hand, SPO utilizes three elements to measure the quality outcome. The
model draws quality form three categories that are structure, process, and outcome. Quality
outcome is defined by SPO as the progress identified in a patient after starting treatment. Thus,
SPO is a model that is mostly utilized in health related activities. As the QMS is utilized by
organizations to measure quality outcome such as improvement by examining the customer
satisfaction, SPO is used in measuring quality outcome from the progress of a patient.
SPO is the model that best supports the evidence-based medicine framework. This model
is best for measuring and defining the quality outcome. The model provides a framework that
helps draw information concerning the quality of health care from structure, process, and
outcome. The structure and process in the framework refer to the activities performed in health
care to examine patient progress and efficacy of treatment (Ledlow and Stephens, 2018). The
outcome is the result obtained from tests done on a patient concerning their health. As such, the
SPO provides a reliable and effective framework that examines health care services.
Organizations should put more effort to ensure that health services provide value to their
patients. For instance, the care organizations should address issues such as poor quality,
escalating costs in medical services and the high number of citizens without insurance coverage
