TEENAGE PREGNANCY 2
Teen pregnancy is one of the trending issues in the world. The rate at which teenagers
become pregnant is alarming and prompt measures need to get placed aimed at its reduction.
Majority of the teen pregnancies are unplanned (Sedgh et al. 2015). Teenage pregnancy gets
linked to critical issues such as poverty and income, overall child bearing, out of wedlock births,
and education and other irresponsible behaviors such as drug abuse.
Daughters of teen mothers are three times more likely of becoming parents themselves
compared to mothers who got a child at the age of 20-21 (Bledsoe et al. 2017). Just 38% of all
the teen girls in the United States of America getting children before the 18
th
birthday graduates
with a high school diploma. The reduction of teenage pregnancy enhances the overall well-being.
Teen mothers have a higher probability of to forego the prenatal care during their first trimester
of gestation compared to the old parents.
Oklahoma is ranked the second last in the United States, ahead of Mississippi in the
Prevention of Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy (Kocsis, 2017). Oklahoma’s birthrate in the year
2014 was 38.5% per 1,000 teenage women which was more than 1.5 times the national average
that got equivalent to 24.2 per 1,000 teenage women, working out to 4,802 teen births. In
Oklahoma, the highest teenage birth rate gets seen among the Hispanic teens.
Oklahoma lacks a comprehensive curriculum for teaching sex education in schools and
students are left to decide for themselves (Currin et al. 2017). Limited access to contraceptives
also contributes to a higher teen birth rate. The nation does not allow people who are under the
age of 18 years to access contraceptives without parental consent. High pregnancies than birth
rates gets witnessed as Oklahoma is among the states that allow abortion but with the permission
of a parent.
