Running Head: ENCOURAGING PHYSICAL ED PARTICIPATION 2
March 5, 2012
Dear Parents:
Thank you for approaching me with your concerns regarding the value of physical
education in the context of a highly competitive college application process. I appreciate your
concerns, and I hope to appropriately address and alleviate them.
Fitness is defined as the quality or state of being or a state of physical soundness.
Physical education is important in that it not only promotes and helps maintain the fitness level
of students, but moreover trains the students’ minds and teaches them how to maintain a healthy
lifestyle, level of fitness and overall wellness and well-being.
Hence, I can fully understand your child’s desire to pursue more academic classes per se
than physical education, but attending and fully participating in physical education will actually
help your child’s performance in his other academic endeavors. It is said that a healthier body is
essential for a healthier mind, and that saying could not be truer. Not only will pursuing physical
education lead your child to a healthy life, but will lower cholesterol levels, increase energy
levels, and promote good cardiovascular health. Working out can directly improve your mental
function.
If your child maintains his fitness and exercises regularly you will find that your child’s
grades will either improve or remain at a top level if they are already stellar. Beyond academics,
physical education is essential for the health of your child, something that trumps even as noble a
goal as a college education. Fitness improves one’s quality of life.
