SAVING DACA 2
Saving Deferred Action for Children Action
Martin Batalla Vidal is a plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit about Deferred Action for
Children Arrivals (DACA). He also is a participant of Make the Road New York a community
organization which offers services and organize immigrants. Martin Batalla is the author of this
article which was published by Washingtonpost.com. The primary purpose of the article is to
explain the reason as to why he and other people want to move to court to challenge the decision
of Trumps administration for terminating Deferred Action for Children Arrivals.
Martin and his family moved to New York City from Morelos Mexico where he was born
in the year 1990. He had just started school, and though born in Mexico, New York was his
hometown as he had no memories of his birth country. His desire to be the first child in his
family to attend college made him work hard in school. However, in the year 2008 when he was
thinking about joining college, his mother told him that he was undocumented. The world of
opportunities for him shrank dramatically because, without a Social Security number, he was not
eligible for scholarships or financial aid
President Obamas administration announced DACA in 2012, but it took some time
before Martin could apply. The fear of sharing his status with the government saw him stay until
2014 when he gathered the courage to apply. His approval for DACA came in 2015 where he has
issued a three-year work permit. He hoped that this would change his life with a wage enabling
him to go to school. The state of Texas and other Republican states sued the government after a
guidance for DACA to change the length of work permit from two to three was issued. His three-
year work permit was cut to two after this movement, and he knew this was not right. He joined
hands with Make the Road New York and Immigrant Rights Advocacy clinic to go to court and
fight back.
