DECIDING WHO GETS THE SWINE FLU VACCINE 2
1. From a utilitarian point of view, who do you think should be in the priority group?
The healthcare providers, caregivers for children and pregnant women should be in the
priority group because they are the ones who bear the highest risk of acquiring the flue.
From a justice as fairness point of view, who should be in the priority group?
On a fair view, the healthcare providers when handling the vulnerable patients, they need to
be protected from getting the swine flu. This will help them administer the vaccine without fear
of being affected. They will render their services with more zeal because they always aim at
improving the health of people. The pregnant women should also be in the priority group as well.
This is because the mothers of the unborn babies due to various developmental processes in their
bodies, their immune system needs to be boosted so as to protect their unborn.
2. Should people who make society flourish through their economic contributions, such as
the employees of Google or Wall Street firms, be put in the priority group?
I support their inclusion in the priority list. This is because, in instances where there are too
many people to be given the vaccine, they would offer their assistance in administering it. They
could be trained thus increase the personnel of the vaccine givers as a strategy of reducing longer
queues. They would also be sent to other areas so as to reach more people on the priority list. So
as they serve others, their health needs to be in check to prevent them from being passed on the
flu by the people with the symptoms.
