GENDER STEREOTYPES AND CULTURE 2
Gender stereotype typically refers to the generalized knowledge of what a particular
gender is expected to be, in terms of behavior, attributes, characteristics and job occupation. It is
something that is fed in the mind of an individual during young age and which he or she gets to
transfer to the generation that comes after them (Franceschini, et.al, 2014). Young people may
get to identify what they as expected to do is a male or a female through interaction with the
society or in terms of classroom lessons. For instance, individuals with male identity are
expected to be strong and should not cry in public no matter what they are going through. It is
also the gender stereotypes that make men go for a given group of jobs as some categories of
jobs are left for the women.
Culture, on the other hand, refers to the shared beliefs, norms and practices that are
common to a specific group of individuals. Whatever is highly esteemed by a given group of
individuals may be seen for granted by another group of people depending on their cultural
background. In the world today, there are many cultural orientations which are like an identity of
the people. Based on the cultural background affected behavior, it is quite easy to associate an
individual with a given place or origin or belief system (Lindsey, 2016). For instance, Muslims
are identified easily by the type of attire they embrace.
Gender stereotypes and culture are two phenomena that cannot be separated. When it
comes to jobs appropriate for men and women, culture dictates a lot. The type of jobs that should
be done by both men and women are dictated by their specific cultural beliefs. For instance, most
cultures would advocate that technical type of jobs should be done by men and not women as
they are traditionally masculine. Women, on the other hand, are expected to do some slightly
simple jobs like secretariat, and house help, as well as early childhood teachers since women, are
assumed to be tender enough to handle such jobs (Lindsey, 2016).
