Now, first of all let us find out the desired amount of alcohol in the final solution. We have been asked
to create a 2 ltr solution with 50 % alcohol content in it. That means:
Alcohol Content (A) = 2*50% = 1 ltr
Now, let us assume that we take x ltr of 40% Solution and y ltr of 80% solution. The summation of their
alcohol content should be equal to 1 ltr. Therefore,
x*40% + y*80% = 1
40x+80y = 100
20(2x+4y) = 20(5)
2x+4y = 5 ------- equation i
Also, the sum of x and y needs to be equal to 2 ltr as that is the volume of final solution. That means:
x+y = 2 ----------- equation ii
y = 2-x , putting this value in equation I we get.
2x+4(2-x) = 5
2x-4x+8=5
-2x=-3
x=3/2ltr
y = 2-(3/2)
y=1/2 ltr
