LOW-WAGE WORKERS 2
Although the United States of America is a dreamland for many and most countries look
up to the its national systems in order to emulate them, there are so many shortcomings in this
country that need to be addressed. Low wage service is not uncommon in America with the
average minimum wage at $7.25. This implies that having a job and even working hard does not
guarantee that a person will get a good salary and live a better life in America. The federal, state
and local labor agencies are responsible setting the effective minimum wages. There are various
cities with an effective minimum of wage of less than $8 per hour (Cassleman, 2015). They
include Washington, D. C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and San Francisco. Surprisingly, New
York City has an effective minimum wage of $3.86. This paper aims to show how low wage
service works in America and how this affects the lives of low-wage workers. Barbara
Ehreneich’s model in her book “Nickel and Dimed” will be the model applied in this paper.
Paul Graham works in a grocery in New York City and is one of the people taking home
peanuts every other month.
Me: Hi, my name is Peter Adams, a researcher for Jobs for The Future.
Paul: Hello, I am Paul, and I work for Fresh Groceries.
Me: Do you love your job, Paul? Are you ready to shift to another job if the opportunity comes
your way?
Paul: Yes, I have a passion for selling groceries, and I strongly feel that I love my job. However,
the greatest shortcoming is the low wages I am entitled to every other end-month. Of course, I
will grab an employment opportunity with both hands should a well-paying job come my way.
Me: Would you mind telling how much you earn per hour.
