employees are not machines and should be treated with respect. If employees work in a quality
environment their work productivity would increase. “Owen asserted that the quality and
quantity of workers' output were influenced by conditions both on and off the job”(Plunkett,
2013, p. 43). Many people did not recognize this theory till Mary Parker Follet mentions it again
in the 1920’s.
A psychologist named Elton Mayo helped highlighted behavioral of workers. In the year of 1924
he conducted five studies with the help of National Academy of Sciences their main focus was
on a Western Electric plant in Cicero, Illinois. During these studies it showed how a job social
atmosphere highly influenced productive. He discovered that when employees were treated with
dignity, in a way that showed concern for their welfare and individuality, commitment and
productivity increased (Plunkett, 2013 ,p. 43). Also, the studies intensified management’s
attentiveness of social need of workers. Elton Mayo studies presented that social pressures by
coworkers were a major influence on performance.
Abraham Maslow who is a humanistic psychologist came with a theory of motivation that cosign
with behavioral management theory. The focal point of this theory is that a set of basic human
needs serve as the motivation for behavior. “Maslow did not propose that the behaviors
motivated by these needs were also universal. The needs operate on motivation at the
subconscious level, while the resulting behavior is filtered through our conscious evaluation
processes. The expression of the needs into behavior is thus subject to the influences of learning,
tradition, and cultural mores and constraints”( Seeley, 1992, p. 1). In an article titled A Theory of
Human Motivation, Maslow identified and examined five basic human needs which are
physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization.
When Maslow published his article it made managers look at employees in a different light.
