1. How do you define a developing world? Where is the geographical location of the most
developing countries?
While the use of the term developing world is up for debate, whether it is politically correct to
use or not, many people have a certain number of characteristics which come to mind when they
hear the term developing world. Most people myself included, would define a developing world
as a country or group of countries whose socioeconomic factors are lower than the rest of the
world comparatively.
There are developing countries scattered throughout the world, however, they can mostly be
found in Africa. In addition, there are others found in Asia. Finally, in the western hemisphere,
many consider Hatti to be a developing country.
2. We read in the Webtext: While there is deprivation, there is also adaptability, innovation, and,
increasingly, problem-solving. The developing world, which includes over a hundred countries
scattered over multiple continents, has enormous varietyin climate, culture, and even level of
development" If so, what makes a developing country labeled as such? What are some of the
innovations and achievements of some countries like India?
As in any situation, if there are limited resources, innovation must occur to make life sustainable.
India is the perfect example of a developing country which has turned to innovation in order to
keep pace with developed countries around the globe.
One of the ways India is working to bring themselves toward a better future is to focus on
vocational training as well as education for its people. This has lead the country to a frugal way
of implementing innovation. Frugal innovation is innovation that occurs based on resources
available versus a "pie in the sky" mentality that often occurs in more developed countries.
There are many examples of frugal innovation throughout India. One engineer created a
refrigerator that is composed completely of clay and costs no more than $50.oo and does not
require electricity to function. General Electric offers a travel sized device which allows medical
providers in India to preform ultrasounds on their patients at the low cost of $7,900 which is
significantly less than traditional machines which cost about $150,000. The affordability of this
device has allowed India to care for patients in their most rural of areas. Wind power is another
innovation used by the people of India. Bamboo windmills which cost a low $100 were invented
by 2 Indian gentlemen which allow the poorest people in the nation the ability to pump safe,
brine water.
These few examples prove that with great minds and an interest in helping one another, any
country has the opportunity to prosper.
