ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) 2
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
In my future activities, I would like to work with children exhibiting Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Such type of children faces very many challenges in the
societies which they dwell in, and this hugely affects their growth stages. The disorder mainly
affects teens, but when the problem is not given consideration, it may continue up to adulthood.
The condition is characterized by the individual being hyperactive, and in most cases, they are
unable to control their impulses. Additionally, such individuals have serious troubles paying
attention, and thus this affects their interactions with other individuals. In this case, there are
various psychological instruments that can be used to measure the extent of Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The four critical elements of measuring attention through
mental testing include sustained attention, alternating attention, divided attention, and selective
attention. Monastra points out that all these factors are fundamental in determining the extent of
damage brought about by harboring Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Monastra, 2014).
For the case of ADHD, I will apply specific assessment instruments that will help to
diagnose the children at a tender age, and prevent them from harboring the same disorder in their
adult life. One of the ways I will assess the disease is through carrying out the Test of Variable
Attention (TOVA) which is an automated way of screening for the measure of vigilance,
attention, and perseverance over a given period. The test was developed by Dr. Lawrence
Greenburg in the early 1960s. The test in its practicality is less costly as it does not require any
additional elements (Stiggins, 2017). The test is used to screen the severity of the disorder in the
life of the children, and the repercussion that can be brought about by its growth. Through the
use of this assessment tool, I will be able to point out the specific areas which require specialized
treatment, and focus. Additionally, the personality assessment instrument will comprehensively
