Facebook is one of the Google’s main competitors; this is due to the fact that Facebook
covers average individual unlike Google. This enables Facebook have potential to provide
advertising platform that occupies big market share. Google only can locate where you are
searching from and the content one is searching. On the other hand, Facebook has the ability to
know your name, close friends, location, family members, one’s relationship status, date of birth
and also people’s interests. Facebook has the ability to place adverts on other website depending
on the nature of the site. Compared to Facebook, Google approximately owns twenty five
percent of the market share (Adler, 2010).
Google recognizes the need to borrow from Facebook’s social data for it to grow towards
social media search. In case it happens that Google loses the social media search fight, it will
remain a platform for research and fact finding only. On the other hand Facebook will become
the search engine for social recommendations, entertainment, dating, and beauty affairs among
others.
Another Google competitor is yahoo; this is because yahoo deals with internet products,
content marketing and services unlike Google. The strategy yahoo uses is highly competitive
and is characterized by frequent changes, new technologies arising and increased competition.
This enables yahoo to have huge user’s database, thus generating high revenue from the adverts
compared to Google. Yahoo also competes with Google in generating high traffic on the site
hence being preferred by many marketers (Adler, 2010).
The fact that only few companies with huge market share exist, competition continues to
be high between them but the margins are still impressive. Yahoo being a strong brand with over
seven hundred million people makes it a threat to Google through the traffic generation on the
