Reflective Journal About The Experience Over Practicum Rotation
I was on a night shift rotation at the cVICU at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center when
we received a patient with heart problems. A quick check-up on the patient gave me an unfortunate
result. The patient's challenge with his heart had made it difficult for him to interact with society.
By the time the patient arrived at our health facility, he could hardly even talk. I rushed the patient
into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and worked to rescue the man at top speed. Heart problems of
this nature are usually an excruciating experience.
The process of treating a patient of this nature requires diligence, and what many people
would not dare touch the patience. I thought of introducing anesthesia to the patient's body before
starting the treatment. Even in a situation that anesthesia numbs the whole body (Patil et al., 2020).
Medics usually hesitate in using anesthesia, especially when a medical procedure can still go on
without it. With all options of reducing the pain not viable, the man had to go through one of the
most excruciating medical procedures. The following morning, I put the patient under the
painkiller and performed an open-heart surgery procedure. The patient was overly weary from the
previous night's ordeal and soon fell asleep.
This incident was critical because cardiovascular experts constantly look for ways to
reduce pain during countless heart surgeries. Despite all the research on cardiovascular health,
medics are yet to reduce cardiovascular patients' pain (Primatesta et al., 2007). Still, only a
fraction of the cardiovascular has to endure excruciating medical procedures.
Although the situation was dire, my concern was to save the patient's life. So consumed in
the medical activities to safely perform the medical procedure and save the patient's life, I did not
even think of the pain he was experiencing. Therefore, during the medical procedure, I was
