The War Of 1812
Introduction
The war of 1912 refers to a military conflict between the United States and the Great
Britain between 1812 and 1814 (Berton, And James). Canada found itself involved in the conflict
because it was a British colony. America invaded many parts of Canada including the great
lakes, the Upper Canada and the Lower Canada. The idea of civilian soldiers which was a
characteristic of the war in Canada helped build a national identity. This paper seeks to explore
the war and find out if it was justified.
Causes of the War
The two most important causes of the war were the interference of American trade by the
British and expansionist visions of American war hawks” (NMAH). Napoleonic wars between
1799 and 1815 are said to have played a key role in causing the war. Napoleon Bonaparte, the
first consul who later became Empire of France, passed orders that aimed at crippling the British
trade. These decrees prompted the Great Britain to take measures that were interpreted by the

trading in Europe, searching American ships for contrabands and royal navy deserters. In June of
1812, the president of United States signed the declaration of war on Great Britain
(History.Com).
Consequences of The War
Both the militias lost soldiers and even military leaders. On the side of the United States,
the expected consequences of the war did not come to fruition. This is because the peace treaty
failed to solve issues like impressments and maritime rights which had prompted it to engage
Britain (Berton, And James). Another failure on the American side was that the war provided
that military conquest was not possibly the way to the annexation of Canada as “the war hawks”
had hoped. The positive however came with the Americans winning several see battles which
were an indication of impending American might.
On the side of Canada, the war proved to be positive as far as nationalism is concerned.
Although British regulars did much of the fighting, there arose a myth that the war was won by
civilian soldiers (Berton, And James). Such myths gave Canada the first sense of community and
were a sound basis for nationhood in the country. To that end, it is plausible to qualify Canada
has real winners of the war.
Was the war necessary for Canada to become a nation?
For every cause to stand, it needs a good foundation. Americans thought that upper
Canadian population which was predominantly American would help the win the war on that
front. This, however, did not happen as the Canadian Americans wanted to be left alone. The
myths that arose after that war in Canada, notably the one that said that civilian soldiers rather
than British regulars won the war gave Canada the very first sense of community. These myths
